Every morning you have to wake up and be you

It's rare when I'm late these days getting some reading done. Rarer still that I was up until 1:30AM reading because I cannot put the book down.

The positive buzz for this book has been earned. I vowed to stay up until midnight with it, but the roller coaster twists kept boosting my adrenaline. I had to know how the best work of fiction I've read this year ended.

On their fifth wedding anniversary, Amy Dunne goes missing. There are signs of a struggle. After an investigation, Amy's husband, Nick becomes the main suspect. Did he make her disappear? Gillian Flynn spins together a riveting story of meanness, lies, stupidity and flat out craziness as we never quite know what is really happening during the course of the crime. Oh yes, crimes were committed, but by whom, and when? The end is a bit contrived, but honest. We never quite know our spouses, and if we knew what they were truly capable of, would be commit to them?

Quite the page turner, seek this out.

At least one room has a good view

It's a building I've only been inside of five times in my 22 years in this city. Yet, it remains significant.
Divorce hearing. Divorces. Two marriage license. I do not want to go in here again unless someone gives me a seven figure check upon exit.

Marriage the Second, the Parts that Melted

Somewhere in here I got married for a second time. My soon to be mentioned that a certain Saturday in March also fell on St. Patrick's Day. I thought it was a good idea too.

Finding a venue was tough, but in the end it worked out ok. It was close to the airport for our out of state guests. There was a shuttle and that seemed to work well.

The officiant was wonderful, the theme obvious. Too bad there was a stupid sum of money wasted on an ice sculpture of a Claddagah.

The motel was a spacious Holiday Inn Express, but not anymore.

Does not even look open anymore.

What a Dump

The sun finally made an appearance yesterday afternoon. After mowing the lawn it was time to sit in the back room with a beverage and some vinyl.

One of the records I picked was from the Walker Brothers.

They were one of the rare bands who were American and became famous in the UK.

This morning I woke up to read that one of the founders of the group, John Walker, has died of cancer at the age of 67.

Not since Roy Orbison have I played vinyl only to find that the artist died the next day. If I were David Bowie or Paul Weller I'd not cancel any doctor's appointments.

"This is my first marriage!" I exclaimed during the first scene of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf."

Ah Martha, telling George that, "He knew," when he really did not. Or did he? Geez, they deserved each other. Not that I was Richard Burton, or she Elizabeth Taylor. It's the only film to be nominated in every eligible category of the Academy Awards and every one of those nominations was deserved.

There is a bit of drinking that happens during the film. Alcohol is bad for you, kids, remember this.

In other news my son has figured out how to unlock the locks of the back door. This is both good and bad.

Sports and Weddings

First up I am reading at the Columbus Arts Festival again this year. The reading is set for Saturday, June 4th at 2:20. You can see the whole Word is Art schedule here.

Thrilled that I'm not going first. Good mix of poets this year, the familiar and unfamiliar.

An early post for Saturday because I will be busy in the morning watching Everton play Manchester United.

Just watched the Sabres blow a three goal lead only to win in overtime against Philadelphia. Game six is in Buffalo on Sunday. I do not know if this Buffalo team can win a game seven on the road.

Also on Sunday is the Old Firm match. This one has some unfortunate drama as Celtic Manager Neil Lennon was targeted with a nail bomb. Luckily it was intercepted but it's yet another ugly incident for the rivalry to stomach.

Enough about sports.

Day 23 - A song you want played at your wedding.

My answer to that is which one?

At wedding one, there was no music. Maybe that's why it was a joyless marriage.

Wedding two had music, nice music. Some unexpected music. Alice Cooper and Annie's Song were played. It also had a hideous, excessive ice sculpture. More on this on day (checks sheet) 28.

Wedding three also had music. Nice music. Some unexpected music. The DJ called us to the dance floor, which was the lawn of the B&B. It was also something neither of us really wanted to do. We did not have a 'song'

But we gamely got out there and the song started, and we were confused because the song had nothing to do with us. It was also, really really long. Or it seemed that way.

We muddled through it.

I'm going to embed the original of the song, because I like it better than the cover. This is not a slam on the DJ either. He's awesome.

Who were you then who are you now?

A long stressful workweek ends and a new chapter in my life starts. She gets here tomorrow. For good. I'm having the last Irn-Bru because she's bringing a fresh batch with her. After that's gone, we're on our own. Or to Jungle Jim's.

I've been part of two broken marriages and really do not want to go for the triple crown of failure. Who is perfect here? Not me. Far from it. Often times I get the feeling I was not even liked in my few previous relationships, that my eccentricities were just tolerated for some mysterious reason.

At least I can laugh when a friend of mine says I don't have enough trick to be a sociopath.

Getting the house in better shape. Finding the dust bunnies, probably missed a few spots so I'm proofreading the floor and things. Might even change the locks.

Another message on the machine for L. Another bill collector. I wonder if it's one of the bank accounts she overdrew from then skipped out on. One of them she had to have a relative cosign for. She must have hidden that from him the way she hid a credit card debt and who knows what else from me.

Headed out to First Draft tonight. Looking forward to seeing some folks tonight. It's going to be a good weekend.
